Introduction
Welcome to the oldest established Bed & Breakfast in Portland, Maine!
Innkeepers Phil and Sue Cox graciously welcome you to their restored 1869 Victorian home located in Portland's prestigious, historic Western Promenade neighborhood. Situated on a quiet, tree-lined street in a unique residential neighborhood of Victorian architecture, the Inn on Carleton is close to the center of downtown Portland. It's a short walk to the Portland Museum of Art, Maine Medical Center, the Performing Arts Center, and the city's business district. Close at hand are Casco Bay's Calendar Islands, the international ferry to Nova Scotia, and the Old Port area with its cobbled streets, colorful shops and many fine restaurants.
The Inn on Carleton Bed and Breakfast was featured as a recommended place to stay in the October 2002 issue of Yankee Magazine (page 99).
The arched double doors open into a grand entryway of original trompe l'oeil artwork by the famous artist Charles Schumacher. An elegant, winding stairway leads to six wonderful guest rooms, located on the second and third floors. In keeping the historical flavor of the Inn, the six spacious guest rooms boast high ceilings, large windows and exquisite period antiques. For your comfort and convenience, all the guest rooms have a private bath and are air conditioned for your comfort. All guest rooms also have port jacks that will allow you an on-line connection to retrieve your email.
We want your visit to our Inn to be relaxing and comfortable. It's our hope that you will feel at home. The parlor is for the enjoyment of our guest, and there you will find magazines, newspaper and interesting books about Portland. A basket of menus from local restaurants is available for your convenience. You may relax with a good book, or just sit by the fire in the parlor and enjoy the period antiques, and wonderful collection of clocks. You may want to visit the English Garden, located in the back, and relax with a good book. The garden is quite spectacular in the spring and summer.
Enjoy a generous hot breakfast served family style in one of the two dining rooms. The back dining room has a fabulous display of fine china and brilliant cut crystal. The front dining room will have a wonderful fire going in the fall and winter.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Portland, "the beautiful town that is seated by the sea," is as enchanting today as it was in the 19th century. You can enjoy an evening of professional theater, join concert-goers at the Portland Symphony Orchestra, or tour historic homes, such as Longfellow's childhood home and the stately Victoria Mansion. During the summer, visitors enjoy harbor cruises, whale watches, and boat trips to the nearby Calendar Island. In the winter months you can ice skate at Deering Oaks Park or cross-country ski at nearby state parks. Regardless of the season, sandy beaches and rocky coasts are within a 15-minute drive and the town of Freeport, home of L.L Bean and numerous outlet shops, is only 20 minutes away.
