Innkeepers
David and Susan Balderson have lived in Ellicott City for over thirteen years. Between them, David and Susan have four grown children developing their own careers. Their cat, Samantha, has brightened their lives for the past twelve years.
After marrying in 1979, David and Susan relocated to San Diego for seven years. They both embarked upon new careers: Susan in accounting, and David in sales at McCormick & Company. In 1986, the innkeepers returned to Maryland via David’s transfer for McCormick. Susan graduated, cum laude, from Towson University. With her accounting bachelor’s of science degree, Susan immediately joined C.W. Amos & Company as a staff accountant in the entrepreneurial business division. She passed the CPA examination on the first sitting. Since leaving C.W. Amos & Company, she has specialized in bankruptcy accounting, most recently with the federal government.
Upon returning to Baltimore in 1986 until he resigned at the end of 1998, David worked strictly with entrepreneurial businesses acquired or developed by McCormick. In the process of developing his career, he moved from sales to marketing, with a concentration in new product development and new business management. David was the key player in taking the Supermarket Food Service project from inception to almost four million dollars in sales by 1997. He took classes in cooking at the Culinary Institutes of America and at Baltimore Culinary College. He has worked in kitchens at Marriott Corporate Dining facilities and at other facilities such as Georgetown University, Loyola College in Chicago, and the Philadelphia Main Post Office. He has been both a panelist and a featured speaker at conventions for the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and the American Meat Institute (AMI).
