Introduction
The Parsonage Inn is situated on the main street of St. Michaels at the northwest end of the Historic District, close to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and many fine restaurants, shops, and the harbor. St. Michaels is known as the town "that fooled the British, " in 1813 when they tried to destroy the shipyards producing many of the blockade runners used by our young Navy. This area and its history provided the framework for James Michener's classic novel "Chesapeake." The pace of life is clearly slower - and the beautiful vistas along our rivers and bays, plus the wonderful seafood served in the restaurants will bring you back again and again. Awarded three stars by Mobil and two diamonds by AAA, this Inn has achieved high occupancy due to its ideal location, decor, hospitality, tantalizing gourmet beakfast, and fair prices.
This Victorian was built as a "show house" by the owner of the local St. Michaels Brickyard in 1883 and has a remarkable array of brick inlays and detailing along with Eastlake-style gingerbread trim on the porches. In 1924, it was transferred to the Union Methodist Church to serve as the Parsonage for over 60 years, until Willard Workman of Swathmore, PA and his oldest son restored the building in 1985, while converting it to an 8-room B&B with private baths plus parlor and dining room for the guests.
A full hot breakfast is served in our dining room at 8:30 and 9:30 each morning. Fruit smoothies, poached pears or other seasonal fruit will start your meal. An entree of filled crepes, apple breakfast pudding, creamed eggs with smoked salmon over puff pastry or the innkeepers latest creation follows. There are fresh baked pastries, scones, sweet breads, coffee and more. Ask the innkeeper about special requests. Afternoon tea and goodies are served in the parlor at 4 pm. During the summer months, lemonade is available.
Special PackagesWinter in St. Michaels 2 Nights, Breakfast, Afternoon Tea, Maritime Museum tickets, Wine Tasting, $40 Dinner Certificate, taxes....(more)
Guests can use the front porch, deck or picnic table while staying at the inn. The parlor has books, magazines and a binder with menus from the many fine restaurants. Just ask us for information or suggestions for where to have lunch or dinner - or for activities in St. Michaels or Talbot County. Sailing on one of the restored Skipjacks or a sail at sunset can make for an unforgettable trip to our inn.
Guests can use the Inn's bikes to explore the many scenic vistas provided by the Miles River and the Eastern Bay. Day trips to Oxford via the nation's oldest ferry service (c. 1683) that crosses the Tred Avon River or longer excursions to Tilghman Island via protected bike lanes are easy. You can spend hours in the many antique shops, clothing boutiques, book stores and the ice cream parlor. Tennis courts are nearby with excellent golf at Hogs Neck in Easton. Or stay at our inn and enjoy the front porch, sun deck or our parlor as many "Victorians" would have done over 120 years ago when much of the town was built. Many special events are held at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum across the street and over on the harbor.
The off season has special charms as the Canadian geese arrive in formation during October - the winter months are marked by the smell of the wood fires on your arrival evening - and spring brings forth our tulips and other flowers. Summer is both warm and full of activity.
