No destination in the state can match the timeless quality of Southern
Maryland, a three-county peninsula that's bounded by the Chesapeake Bay on
one shore and the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers on the other. Southern
Maryland is characterized by deep traditions rooted in a strong
religious heritage and the cultures of the tobacco farmers and
watermen who have long made their homes here.
For visitors, Southern Maryland offers historic communities, peaceful landscapes, an inviting shoreline and an appealing way of life. One of the top
draws in the region is Historic St. Mary's City, a living history museum
that depicts life in Maryland's first capital, established by English settlers more than 350 years ago. Other regional highlights are the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons and the Indian heritage abundant in Charles County.
