History

The building was built by Jonas Glotfelty in 1889-1890, who acquired the large farm from his father in 1887. The ample farm house was top quality in its day. Prosperous farmers, the Glotfeltys were descended from Solomon Glotfelty who, as a small boy, emigrated from Switzerland in the 1730s. Switzerland of the 1700s was not the peaceful country of today. Mennonites were severely persecuted and many fled, with armed escorts, to the religious tolerance of Pennsylvania where they spread westward. Today, Garrett County has many Mennonite and Amish families, mostly farmers and craftsmen, all good citizens.

In 1924, at age 80, Jonas Glotfelty retired from farming and gave the farm, after selling 56 acres to the Youghiogheny Electric Company, to his son in return for life support of the parents. The Youghiogheny Electric Company built the lake in 1925, flooding the 56 acres to within 13 feet of the house. The Lake Pointe Inn is thus the oldest building on, and the closest to, the lake which has over 1300 homes on the 65 mile shoreline.

The lake cove by Lake Pointe Inn was once the Buffalo Marsh, named after the buffalo carcass found mired there by frontier hunters in the 1700s when buffaloes roamed the area. Thus was named Marsh Hill, today's Wisp Ski Area, just across Marsh Hill Road from the Lake Pointe Inn.

The old farmhouse was renovated into a "modern" lake front vacation home with the 1939 renovation. Sam Leff, owner of Pittsburgh's 7th Avenue Hotel, bought the property in 1939 and proceeded with renovation. The job included installation of then modern plumbing, wiring and central heat. The great room, with massive stone fireplace, and dining room were created, with their wormy chestnut paneling and beams, in the mountain lodge style. James and Robert McCann, owners from 1950-1995, created an apartment in the building's rear but made little change to the 1939 renovation.

Present owners George and Linda Pettie acquired the property in April 1995 and immediately embarked upon a complete new renovation and conversion into a nine guest room, nine and one half bath, Bed & Breakfast Inn with innkeepers apartment. The great room was saved intact with its chestnut beams, columns and paneling as well as the oak flooring, nine foot wide stone chimney/fireplace and ten original windows. Chestnut paneling in the dining room was saved while the rest of the building was gutted inside and out. The architecture was preserved while all new custom quality mechanical systems, windows, insulation, commercial kitchen, interior and exterior surfaces were replaced, most in period style. A compatible addition expanding the innkeeper quarters, was built. The Inn and its 9 bedrooms are furnished in the Arts and Crafts tradition with custom made Mission style furniture, ironwork and pottery.

In July 1996, Georgine Reed (interior designer) and Linda and George Pettie were presented with the Design Award by the Washington Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

The renovation was completed in early 1996 and Lake Pointe Inn opened in mid-January 1996. The superior quality of the renovation provides Garret County's safest and most comfortable lodging establishment.
