Introduction
Eleanor Roosevelt, Katherine Hepburn and Joe DiMaggio are only a few of the celebrated people who have visited 4 East Madison Street in Baltimore, Maryland. Around the turn of the 20th century, the mansion was purchased by one of the country's earliest physician's groups, The 4 East Madison Orthopedic Association. This group was headed by Dr. William Stevenson Baer, a pioneering orthopedic surgeon at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and Dr. Frederick Baetjer, Maryland's first radiologist. Their unique skills and reputations brought many athletes, celebrities and Baltimoreans to these premises. They included John F. Kennedy, Wallace Beery (movie actor), Mickey Mantle and Flo Ziegfeld. We invite you to come and walk in the steps of American heroes, revisit the past and discover whether one of your heroes was here also.
Our Home is Designed For:
The Business Person: high-speed internet access
The Visiting Professional: private meeting rooms
The Discerning Guest: elevator room access
The Bride: gracious entrance hall and garden
Marble stairs, mahogany doors and wainscoting, ornate etched glass panels and a marble floor greet you as you enter our 1845 home. The front hall is spacious and graced by a wide, sweeping staircase that heads back twenty-some feet before making its turn under the striking, 6 x 9', 19th century stained glass skylight.
Two ample parlors are accessed off the hallway separated if need be, by stunning pocket doors. The parlors each have bays and marble fireplaces as well as beautiful, original ornate plaster and wood work. An elevator to the nine guest rooms is accessed at the rear of the main hallway, beyond which is the formal dining room and two powder rooms.
The dining room is where delectable homemade breakfast is served to our overnight guests. The floor is lovely alternating striped light and dark woods. There are French doors that lead to the formal side garden. These doors are also handicap accessible. The kitchen and an intimate rear parlor extend beyond the dining room. The kitchen has been designed to handle food preparation for large meetings, parties or weddings.
