Visiting Greenfield
Greenfield is located on the Deerfield River where Route 2 intersects I-91, the north-south highway through New England. Route 2 is a primary connector from Boston to New York State making this a most attractive central point in Western Massachusetts. I-91 gives Greenfield ready access to New York City and Canada, and Route 2 offers a byway into Boston to the east and Albany, New York to the west. Greenfield is also well served by rail via the Springfield Terminal Railway and the Central Vermont Railway. It is in the center of a circle of small cities that include Brattleboro in Vermont, Pittsfield, Springfield, Worcester, Leominster and Fitchburg in Massachusetts, and Keene in New Hampshire.
Immediately to its south is the historic town of Deerfield and further south are the communities of Northampton and Amherst and the surrounding five colleges: Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst, Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts. To the east is the Quabbin resevoir, to the west are the Berkshire Mountains, and to the north are the Green Mountains of Vermont.
Among Greenfield's many attractions are:
Poets Seat Tower Park
a 1912 sandstone lookout tower named after a long tradition of poets being drawn to the spot.
Greenfield Energy Park
Truly a park - a place to relax, stroll along tree-lined paths, see energy demonstrations, and play on the kid's train.
Historical Society of Greenfield
is housed in a Victorian Mansion on the corner of Church and Union Streets. There are 15 display closets, some of them lighted, plus five rooms of exhibits and a research library.
Covered Bridge
a 95-foot structure spanning the Green River in an area called the "Pumping Station." It was built in 1972 to replace a 100-year old covered bridge that was burned by vandals. The area is a popular spot for swimming and fishing.
Artspace Community Arts Center
known for exhibits in its Art Space Gallery, arts-in-education programs and detail-rich resource and information base for artists, residents and visitors to the region.
Stoneleigh Burnham School
features the Geissler Gallery, which exhibits art work of students and guest artists throughout the school year. The school also hosts equestrian events.
Pioneer Valley Symphony and Chorus
was founded in 1939 and is among the oldest symphony orchestras in the country. In addition to presenting symphonic and choral music, the PVS provides local musicians, both choral and orchestral, the opportunity to play under professional direction.
