History
Hurlbut and his family moved to South Lee in 1822 with his friend, Charles Owen. Together they established the Owen and Hurlbut Paper Company. Their company quickly grew to become the most influential factor in the development of South Lee. The paper mill, which is operating to this day, still bears the Hurlbut name and can be seen from this beautiful Federal style Country Mansion.
The Federal House remained in the Hurlbut family until 1960. Since then, through various ownerships, this charming Federal-style brick home has been completely restored to the original country elegance of the Hurlbut Home. Now the charming country home is available for guests to visit the Berkshires, to appreciate the culture and history of the area, and to enjoy the warm hospitality of the Innkeepers, Barbara and Philip Broyles.
