About the Baths

The Zachariah Eddy House was built in 1831 as a Greek Revival home and was renovated in the late 1800's with Colonial Revival detail. It still retains most of its original beauty and charm. In an effort to preserve the integrity of its unique architectural style, we have made the decision not to alter the character of individual rooms in order to add all individual baths. Although this has presented some minor inconvenience and is not pleasing to all, we believe that it is important to protect its character in this way. Bathrooms, therefore, may be available in any number of ways from private ensuite (in-room) to private detached (just a few steps away) or on occasion shared (with one other party). Private baths are naturally most preferable and are always made with the earliest confirmed reservation.

This decision not to alter the bedrooms for the sake of convenience has inadvertently resulted in one of the most interesting features of the house:
The Chapel Bath... was an addition to the house in the late 1800's when the owners of the day James and Maria Peirce decided to include a chapel in their renovations. Being a family of both wealth and generosity, Mr. Peirce was simultaneously involved in the financing and construction of the town's first Episcopal Church, the Church of Our Saviour. He was buried at his death under the altar of the new church. For his own personal chapel he spared no expense and today it remains almost exactly in its original condition. It is highlighted by a magnificent oriel stained glass window, no doubt a museum piece, which dazzles brilliantly in the early morning sun. Without compromising its beauty or historical significance, Mr. James Peirce's chapel has been transformed into the "Chapel Bath". Out of necessity and with great respect, the chapel was converted in 1996, just over 100 years after its creation. It was consecrated in 1997 by the Reverend John Paul Eddy of Texas, descendent of original owner Zachariah Eddy. Several other Eddy descendents were in attendance, as well. It has become a truly one of a kind bath and it is still used for meditation today!
