Introduction
Briar Rose Bed and Breakfast is located in the lavishly restored 1891 Queen Anne Victorian home; the original Joseph Keith Nye Estate. Nye Oil Company was established in 1865 by William Nye and was the last American whale oil company. Nye Lubricants is still in operation today. The field stone exterior walls surround the massive façade, encompassing a shingled turret; the location of our circular Queen Room. The tower inspired our name, Briar Rose, as the princess in the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty.
The main foyer leads to the stairway. The large second-floor foyer, graced with antique furniture, affords keyed-entry to our three private guestrooms. All of our bedrooms offer air conditioning, TV and DVD, private bath, hardwood and ceramic floors, and secure keyed-entry. Briar Rose Bed and Breakfast is open year-round.
Enter the foyer with ceramic-tiled floor through a stately French door to the large main foyer, featuring exposed mahogany beams, hardwood Douglas fir floors, and double-fireplace connecting to the cozy living room. The formal dining room graced by an exquisite chandelier and overlooking the backyard 30-foot in-ground pool, flower gardens, and water view, is the setting for your made-to-order full breakfast.
Briar Rose is located on a half-acre private lot with off-street parking, overlooking New Bedford Harbor, close to highways, and within 60 miles of Boston, Cape Cod, Providence, Newport, and ferry service to Martha's Vineyard.
Guests will enjoy a full breakfast cooked to order in the formal dining room, graced by an elegant chandelier. Relax in the living room by the double fireplace, connected to the spacious main foyer, including a game table. The backyard grounds include flower gardens and a water view.
Fairhaven is a coastal community steeped in history. It was the home to whaling captains, such as Captain William H. Whitfield who rescued Manjiro Nakaham, the first Japanese man to live in America; Captain Joshua Slocum who was the first man to sail around the world solo; Franklin Delano Roosevelt's grandparents; John Cooke, the last male Pilgrim; Standard Oil millionaire Henry Huttleston Rogers who donated many European style public buildings to our town, and visitors from around the world. Herman Melville boarded the whale ship Acushnet from Fairhaven. Mark Twain commented about our Millicent Library, "It's the ideal library". The first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought at Fort Phoenix.
Neighboring New Bedford was once the Whaling Capital of the World; now the Fishing Capital. Both Fairhaven and New Bedford share a "Sister-City" relationship with Tosashimizu in Kochi, Japan. Emperor Akihito has visited Fairhaven. Come relive history, explore the architectural wonders of our town buildings, enjoy ocean adventures, savor freshly-caught seafood delights and Portuguese feasts, and relax in romantic elegance.
