Early in the 19th century the house was purchased by the Bartholomew family who owned it for eighty years. During that time it was a stagecoach stop and legend says the former Baird Tavern was part of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. At the end of the 19th century Dr. William Ashley used the house with its clear mountaintop air as a restorative retreat for his patients. Today the inn retains its 18th and 19th century authenticity.

• Extensive perennial gardens surround the house with ever changing colors-from the thousands of brightly lit daffodils that appear in April to the rich hues of New England asters in October.
• There are native high bush blueberries, apples, cherries and pears. A never-ending cast of characters visit the grounds almost daily -- raccoons, red-tailed squirrels, fox, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and even the occasional black bear can be spotted from the kitchen window!
• A birdwatcher's paradise, guests can enjoy year round birding as they watch hummingbirds, cardinals, downy woodpeckers, titmice, chickadees, rose breasted and evening grosbeaks.

Rolling hills, fields and farmland, and old fashioned stonewalls dot the landscape, making this western Massachusetts hamlet a scenic paradise. Situated on a mountaintop in the Berkshire foothills, Blandford is home to the Cobble Mountain Reservoir. Within its 49 square miles, opportunities abound for year round outdoor activities: hiking, biking, swimming, golfing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

There are several restaurants within 15 minutes of Baird Tavern. Or venture to Northampton or the Lenox-Stockbridge area, places renowned for fine restaurants, shops, art galleries, and music. Some guests prefer to bring their own meal and dine by candlelight at the inn.

• Annual events include a Scottish Festival in July, complete with Scottish games, a Scottish Tea Room and Scottish dancing.
• A Bel Canto concert at the White Church in August.
• The Blandford Agricultural Fair on Labor Day weekend has been held annually since the mid 19th century.
• Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival (July & August) in Becket and the minature theater of Chester are minutes away.
• The nearby Berkshires offer a vast array of festivals, theater and scenic attractions that include Tanglewood, Shakespeare & Co., Norman Rockwell Museum, Chesterwood, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Santarella, and much more!

Breakfast is served in the original kitchen of the house that features a cavernous fireplace once used to prepare meals for hungry travelers. Guests can also choose to dine in the tavern's original summer kitchen, built in 1810. Birdfeeders placed at windows on both sides of the kitchen provide an endless source of entertainment during breakfast.
