Applegate in the heart of the Berkshires, was built in the grand era of the 1920's by a New York surgeon for use as a summer estate. It is set on a park-like 6 acre country estate one half mile from the historic town of Lee and about 3 miles from Stockbridge. Once inside the iron gate, the circular drive gives you the first views of Applegate's sweeping manicured lawns and towering trees. The huge fragrant lilac bushes line the driveway and serve to separate the lawns into deliberate garden areas. The rose gardens, perennial beds, fruit orchard and vegetable garden provide interest all year. As you rest in one of the several large hammocks you might get a glimpse of "Gloria's Secret Garden". It invites you to walk in this shade garden or to stop to read on a stone bench. Each season offers you a wonderful view of nature in an estate setting.

At the end of the drive, you arrive at a dramatic two story port-cochere of the Georgian Colonial Main House. The entryway is a spacious foyer furnished with plush carpets, a grandfather clock and other fine antiques. To one side of the foyer is the formal living room with several sitting areas, large fireplace and baby grand piano. This is the setting for the popular nightly wine and cheese reception. Adjacent to the living room is the less formal sun parlor divided into TV and game areas. The best views of the public golf course across the road are from this room. There are large bowls of fine candies, fruit and nuts throughout these common rooms. Across the full length of the main house is a screened porch with views of the heated swimming pool and the lawns and gardens behind it. From the central foyer a curved staircase leads upstairs to five uniquely decorated queen bedded rooms and three luxurious king bedded suites. Adjacent to the Main House is the Carriage House. It contains three units - two elegant king bedded suites and a two bedroom cottage with its own living room, kitchen, dining area, bathroom with whirlpool tub and deck overlooking the Berkshire Hills. The Inn is furnished in a comfortable elegant style. Each accommodation has a private bath, fireplace or stove and central air conditioning. Many of the rooms have a whirlpool tub, TV/VCR/CD, phone and computer jack, wet bar with refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. There is an assortment of special touches in each guest room including fresh flowers, brandy and chocolates.

Enjoy golf and tennis at the Greenock Country Club right across the road from Applegate. Return for a swim in our heated pool or continue into town to enjoy the town private beach on Laurel Lake. After an active day, relax and enjoy dinner at one of the fine Berkshire restaurants.
