The interior was restored with historic precision to every last detail to reflect the Aesthetic Movement, the Victorian subculture that emphasized art in the interior decor. Aesthetic Movement decor, period art, fine antiques and art wall coverings of period designers Charles Eastlake, Walter Crane and William Morris are historically and artistically featured. The original handcarved cherry wood fireplace mantels are catalogued by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in N.Y.C.
This 1886, 18 room architectural gem offers seven spacious museum-quality guest rooms with private bath, ceiling fan and central air conditioning. A full 5 course breakfast, afternoon and evening tea and refreshments are served at guests' convenience. Free transportation to and from nearby Amtrak train depot, bus stations and the colleges. Rooms $75 - $175 depending on number of people, length of stay and season; no pets. Well-behaved children over 10 are welcome. Smoking is limited to outside verandas and gardens. Bicyclists! The entrance to the Norwottuck Rail Trail is only 1/4 mile from the Allen House. The Rail Trail is 8.5 miles long and connects Amherst to Northampton. Bike rentals are available. The recently restored Allen House "Bicycle Barn" features indoor and outdoor security lock-up racks, picnic table, ice and Poland Spring water cooler. Valley Bicycle Shop is less than 1/4 mile from the Allen House Inn for repairs and rentals.
