Introduction
Join our house party in this circa 1846 National Historic Landmark mansion that was part of a sugar cane plantation, 75 miles from New Orleans' French Quarter, 45 miles from Baton Rouge. Meet fellow travelers at a wine-and-cheese reception in the library at 6 p.m., and dine in relaxed candlelit elegance with our set-menu dinner that includes Louisiana specialties such as chicken and andouille gumbo, Cajun shrimp pie or crawfish etouffee, smothered green beans with potatoes and ham, cornbread and bread pudding or pecan pie for dessert. Afterwards, swap stories in the spacious parlor, where brandy and coffee are served to complete the meal.
Then it's time to go to sleep in a bed with a full or half canopy. There are five bedrooms in the main house, one downstairs and four upstairs. In the more informal Charlet House, an early-19th-century riverboat captain's house connected to the mansion by an oak-tree shaded patio, there are three more rooms, including two family suites and a romantic room with a fireplace and a private screened porch. All rooms are air conditioned and have compact disc players with a selection of soft music (as well as a few livelier tunes in the Charlet House). Internet connection is available and we provide a relaxing spa for our guests.
"This is the Old South without the museum-like feel of many plantation homes. Decorated with family momentos
and artifacts, the parlors are warm and homey... Madewood is a remembrance of how the 19th century Southern
aristocracy lived." - National Geographic Traveler, which included Madewood as the only Louisiana representative
in a story on 54 great American inns. National Geographic Traveler also featured Madewood with four other
bed and breakfasts and country inns in another story about the Top Inns of the South.
Madewood Plantation House is a member of the Select Registry and Conde Nast Johansens. It has been featured in a cover story and named one of the "12 best inns of the year" in Country Inns magazine. Madewood also has been featured in Country Home, Vogue, Travel Holiday, Southern Living, Inn Country USA television show and The Home and Garden Channel.
Owned by Keith Marshall, a Rhodes Scholar, art historian and journalist, and his journalist wife Mille, Madewood is lovingly tended by a staff that has been with Madewood for years. Christine Gaudet, Resident Manager, since 1999, was born and raised in France. Christine, who moved from Paris to Louisana, has brought with her a professional style of management that is reflected by her special touch and her relentless effort to make everyone feel welcome.
