Downs is located east of Cawker City and is known to have some of the best inns and B&Bs in the area. Downs is famous for its Kansas Storytelling Festival, which is more than just a single event, as it offers two evening concerts as well as many separate sessions of stories, workshops and music. Downs is known for the "Fun Raiser" by the Historical Railroad Foundation. It is hosted to raise money for the wooden depot restoration. The Depot Quartet features a unique form of entertainment that also raises money by allowing people to bid on silent auction items and eat popcorn and cookies. Just north of the railroad tracks along Morgan Avenue is the Railroad Park’s impressive gazebo. It was built in the early '90s by the Downs Catalysts Club who raised $15,000 over a four-year period for the gazebo, which took three to four years to build. The Downs Carnegie Library, built in 1905, was constructed from a $5,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie and still houses the town's only library. The building is listed on the Federal Registry of Historic Buildings. Russell Restaurant is known for its homemade southern food such as cinnamon rolls, hash browns, French toast and fried chicken. The menu features everything from the biggest and best chicken-fried steak to delicious pies. Russell Restaurant has been serving its customers for 40 years now. Butler's BBQ Steak restaurant features many delectable dishes. Meals such as roasted chicken, steak, seafood and barbeque will keep you coming back. Bitler's BBQ Steak restaurant is open seven days a week. Any Downs bed and breakfast is in itself an interesting place to visit and to just relax. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to relax in a Downs inn and enjoy history, hometown food and a relaxing getaway.
