we've stretched the running time from one month to two. We felt that
lots of folks wanted to enter each month but didn't get around to it
in the 30 days between announcement and deadline. So beginning with
the April Contest, you've got twice as long to enter. And, beginning
with the May Contest, we'll be running two at once: If you haven't
yet entered the April edition, it's not too late -- enter by May 31!
If you need time to consider your answers to the May contest, you've
got until June 30 to work them out and submit them.

Breakfast - Philip, SD. The 78 year old inn building is a 'kit' home
purchased from Sears Roebuck in 1923, and shipped to the nearest rail
depot in Cottonwood, nine miles away. It took two weeks to move all the
pieces by horse and wagon to the homesite. There it was assembled where
the original log homestead had stood, a 'Spanish castle in the midst of
the South Dakota plains.' The Triangle Inn is listed in the National
Register of Historic Places, and offers 4 guest rooms, a Western -
themed carriage house that sleeps 6, PLUS accommodations for horses.

The May 2001 contest is sponsored by The Mayhurst Inn - Orange, VA.
This gorgeous Italianate Villa mansion was built in 1859 by Colonel
John Willis, great nephew of President James Madison. It was a landmark
and a rallying point throughout the Civil War. Stonewall Jackson stayed
here in 1862, and it was the headquarters of A.P. Hill's army in the
Winter of 1863-1864. General Hill's daughter Lucy Lee was born at
Mayhurst that Winter, and her godfather, Robert E. Lee, held her at her
baptism here on May 1, 1864. The property was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places in 1969. Fast-forward to Innkeepers Peg &
Bob Harmon. After purchasing Mayhurst in 1996, and spending 14 solid
months on restoration, they're celebrating their fourth year in business.
