Introduction
One hundred years ago, the Queen Anne-style house at 517 South 14th Street in New Castle was built. A century later, it is beginning a new chapter of life as a bed and breakfast establishment.
While the Bed and Breakfast concept is popular today, the idea isn't really new to this home - it is part of the house's history. From the middle of the last century, rooms were rented out here. Dave McAlister is only the second owner other than the original family. For years, Sarah Hall, a New Castle High School typing teacher, resided there. The home was built by her family.
Raintree Bed & Breakfast, located one block north of the Henry County Historical Society Museum, is easily accessible to the downtown area. The Innkeeper works out of his home operating his own software development business and says that Raintree Bed and Breakfast is a good fit with his home business. "I've always had an enjoyment with history," he says. "I do love it here."
As a business traveler, McAlister knows first-hand the need for such practical accommodations as a data line, desk, room to spread out and feel comfortable while on the road. While his B&B is certainly user-friendly for the business crowd, it's open to visitors of all sorts who may be passing through town for whatever reason.
The entire upstairs of Raintree is rented as one unit, complete with two bedrooms, living room with TV and VCR, efficiency kitchen and bath. The space includes a unique upstairs porch that overlooks an English-style garden instead of grass in the backyard.
The home is modestly outfitted with an eclectic mix of furnishings from various eras. Nothing about the home feels "hands off", but somewhat casual and lived-in. The innkeeper looks forward to meeting people during their stays.
A breakfast is included in the fee, featuring a morning casserole, fresh fruit and juices.
