Best Bed & Breakfast in the Michiana area for
1992, 1993, 2001-2005
Innkeepers Pauline and Bob Medhurst invite you to visit and see why Southhold Heritage Foundation calls this "a really significant piece of architecture". Samuel Good's crystal chandeliers, placed throughout the home, add warmth to the Victorian decor.
The Inn offers six spacious air-conditioned bedrooms, with private baths. One harbors Good's own wall-safe hidden behind a mirror! Guests may relax and chat in the common rooms or on the wide porches surrounding this historic home. They will marvel over the story of moving Good's massive home from its original site (where wreckers threatened it) to the West Washington historic district near downtown South Bend.
Just imagine you are the daughter of a gold miner and a wealthy farmer who gave you this 9,500 sq. foot house as a wedding gift in 1893. Dream about the music that you might have heard as Charles Treanor, Mabel's husband, played the stringed instruments for his family and painted the silk wallpaper that is still in the breakfast room. Or imagine the excitement of reading in the library which has specially designed Frank Lloyd Wright bookcases.
Let's take a walk up the wonderful Italian tiger oak staircase to the second floor. Of course, you are allowed to stop a moment for a chocolate chip cookie in the cookie jar or a refreshing can of juice or pop in the refrigerator. On a sunny day the guests may enjoy the swing and wicker furniture on the wrap around front porch and relax with a glass of iced tea or lemonade.
