Historic Cahokia, Illinois - Birthplace of the Midwest
1699-1999
Just off Illinois Route 3 - is the old Cahokia Courthouse-
an outstanding example of pioneer French architecture,
now a state memorial. The structure is the oldest of all
courthouses west of the Alleghenies.

A subject of intensive historical interest, The Jarrot House is probably the oldest brick house in the upper Mississippi Valley.
When construction of the residence was begun in 1799-workmen making all of its bricks on the spot-there was no state of Illinois. By the time the house was completed in 1806, the Illinois country was part of Indiana Territory. Following the house's completion, Nicholas Jarrot resided in it as something of a feudal lord over Cahokia.
Tourists can linger long and profitably at the old church of the Holy Family, built by the Rev. Gabriel Richard in 1799, and still in a remarkable state of preservation. It is the oldest church west of the Alleghenies.
An example of Colonial French architecture, the freshly reconstructed Martin-Boismenue Home, survives in East Carondelet-North Dupo. The home was built in 1790 and is the oldest residence in Illinois.
