Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one mile down the road, is headquarters to the world's most active "drive-in" volcano. Visit the Thomas Jaggar Museum and Hawaii Volcano Observatory overlooking Halemau'uma'u Crater, home of Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of the volcano. Enjoy miles of spectacular hiking trails, rent mountain bikes, ride horseback through the Park's back roads, or play golf at one of the world's most unusual courses. Situated on the rim of the active Kilauea volcanic crater, Volcano Golf Course lies in the cool highlands 4,000 feet above the sea, with sweeping vistas of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea (both snowcapped in winter). Check out the popular Sunday Farmer's Market at Cooper Community Center. You'll find a colorful and delicious array of produce, baked goods and prepared local dishes. Visit some of the many artist's studios located in the community. Drop in at the Volcano Winery and sample local vintages. Wander the rambling country lanes that weave their way through the rainforest community of Volcano Village. |

Venture off to explore the island; South Point and its green sands beaches, Punalu'u Black Sands Beach turtle sanctuary . Walk the streets of downtown Hilo with its quaint shops and farmer's market, drive along the lush Hamakua coastline. Visit Akaka Falls and Hawaiiain Tropical Botanical Gardens. You'll drive through towns with yesteryear Hawaii charm, rolling countryside, and see many a gracious waterfall. The Waipio Valley lookout shouldn't be missed and isn't much further. Drive across the mighty shoulders of the two largest mountain peaks in the Pacific Basin. And at the end of the day, return to your "home away from home" to rest and renew for the next day's adventures. |
