Discovery Harbour, at the southernmost tip of the Big Island of Hawaii ... and of the United States as well ... is a beautiful rural residential area with lots of green grass, horses, cows, even goats and sheep. Days are warm and nights are cool. We're at the foot of Mauna Loa, about 40 miles south of Kilauea Volcano. Close to this area are Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, with its rare sea turtles, and Green Sand Beach, where you can hike in to see this unusual volcanic sand.
Two bedrooms are available for guests, with a shared bath; one room with a queen-size bed, the other with twin beds. Children are always welcome. When You Visit The Big Island of Hawaii
Naalehu has the distinction of being the southern most city in the United States. Located on the southeastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii, Na'alehu can be found along Highway 11 near Honuapo Bay and the Kau Forest Reserve. Naalehu is also near "Ka-lae," or South Point, which is the southern most point in the U.S., and is believed to be where the first Polynesians landed. You can hike out to the point and enjoy spectacular ocean views from the cliff shoreline. This picturesque, rural town has shops and restaurants and all the necessary amenities, along with a farmer's market, a historical village/park, art galleries and a museum. Naalehu is also home to the annual Hawaiian Hula Festival every Labor Day. Nearby area attractions include the Green Sand Beach of South Point, (the only green sand beach on the island), three golf courses, a tennis court, hiking in the Kau Forest Reserve, tours of local orchards, fruit farms and coffee farms. And, you are just 15 minutes away from swimming, snorkeling, diving, fishing charters, windsurfing and kayak rentals. Naaleha is a 35-minute scenic drive to Volcano National Park where you can experience the world's most active, but safest volcano. The town of Naalehu is located in the "Kau" region of the island, known to many as the "real" Hawaii, and makes a good central location for touring the island.
The closest airports in the area are the Kona International At Keahole airport (KOA) located about 55 miles northwest of Naalehu in Kailua / Kona, Hawaii, the Hilo International airport (ITO) located approximately 57 miles northeast of Naalehu in Hilo, Hawaii, and finally the Waimea Kohala airport (MUE) located roughly 64 miles north of Naalehu in Kamuela, Hawaii.
