Expansive Pool/Jacuzzi Deck Along the coast of Hamakua moku, Mauna Kea 's slopes fall away into the pounding northeast surf which helped shape them. Small villages lie scattered across upland forests and ravines of the cliff-lined windward coast. Deep water-carved gulches and valleys are thick with lush foliage. As you watch the waterfalls tumble down Hamakua's cliffs and ravines and you'll understand why they are called wailele (leaping waters) in Hawaiian. In ancient times the Hamakua wildlands were a resource for bird feathers and canoe logs. In more recent times, the coast was covered with fields of sugarcane. The small villages adapt to the ever-changing economic landscape and today are rural centers of commerce with boutiques, galleries and specialty shops. Each town has its own brand of local flavor.

Adventures on Hawaii 's Big Island are diverse and elemental, and can be physical, recreational, and even spiritual. The West, or Kona, Side of the island is dry and sunny -- a nexus of activity with deep-sea fishing, quaint shops and restaurants, snorkeling, scuba diving, submarine underwater tours, hikes through thick rainforests, horseback riding ... If you're a high activity type, the West Side is the place for you.

The Kohala Coast is Hawaii's Golf Mecca with world-class golf courses. Just getting there is a visual adventure as you drive through vast, dramatic lava fields. If your eyes are really sharp, you might be able to spot the Kona Nightingales (donkeys) which blend into the landscape. Upcountry, the scenery changes dramatically. Waimea is home to Parker Ranch where fluorescent green pastures give way to lush valleys and a host of vibrant natural greens.

Enjoy A Delicious Breakfast Each Morning

On the East Side, Waipio Valley is filled with brilliant flowers and breathtaking waterfalls. Tiny towns and highways built on old railroad trestle bridges recall the sugar plantation heritage of the Hamakua Coast. And the island's "must-see" is Kilauea, the earth's most active volcano.

It's easy to immerse yourself in the culture of Hawaii's Big Island. Try dancing the hula and taking part in an authentic luau (feast). Head upcountry and discover the uniquely blended Hawaiian, Portuguese, and Mexican cultures - still alive and well among Hawaiian paniolo (cowboys) on the island's giant ranches. Visit historical Kealakekua Bay where Captain James Cook dramatically lost his life in 1779. And don't miss Puukohola Heiau. This sacred spot was built in 1790 by King Kamehameha as an offering to the gods, where he asked for success in his campaign to unite the Hawaiian Islands. Waimea is ideally situated for enjoying so many of the Big Island's attractions: world renowned beaches, hiking, waterfalls, spectacular scenery, water sports, unique shopping, fine dining, Mauna Kea stargazing, Wai'pio Valley horseback riding, yoga, massage, swimming in our refreshing pool, local farmer's markets, bird watching, honeymooning, romance and so much more....Whatever your interests, the dry side of Waimea is the place to base yourself. We are only 1 hour from Hilo and 45 minutes from the Kona airport. One hour to the Mauna Kea visitor's center and 90 minutes to the Volcano village.

Million Dollar View With 365 unforgettable days to choose from, Hawaii's Big Island is the perfect place to make your wedding dreams come true and celebrate year after year. Exchange your vows and flower lei, just the two of you, barefoot in the sand. Or fill a formal ballroom with family and friends, and tropical splendor fit for a queen. Sail into a sunset ceremony at sea, walk down the aisle of Hawaii's oldest Christian church, have fun with a western wedding paniolo-style, stroll through a garden by Hilo Bay, crossing a collection of oriental bridges to symbolize your journey together. Engage your imagination, indulge your senses, elevate your spirits here, together.

Whether it is family fun, a romantic getaway, or a dream honeymoon, Makai Hale is the perfect
place for you. Its convenient location makes it ideal for exploring the Big Island of Hawaii.
