History: A Kona Retreat since 1978
Honolulu Advertiser Chairman Thurston Twigg-Smith, a kamaaina (old-line) descendant, built the Inn in 1978 as a Kona vacation home. Located on the slope of Mt. Hualalai at 1,400 feet, the elevation affords the famous 16-mile coastal view and refreshingly cool climate. It was converted to accommodate guests in 1987. The Holualoa Inn sits on a 30-acre Kona Coffee estate, which adjoins a working cattle ranch. The 7,000 square foot inn was run by Thurston's two nieces, Oona and Sophie, for the first 18 years until being purchased by Cassandra Hazen in 2005.
Cassandra Hazen visited Hawaii many times before settling on the Big Island as her favorite. Prior to the Holualoa Inn, she ran a very successful hospitality and corporate events business, including 15 years as the Executive Director of the California Bed & Breakfast Association - CABBI. She is joined by her General Manager, Hal Nordblom, a 15-year veteran of 5 Diamond/5 Star properties including the Four Seasons here on the Kona Coast. The rest of the team bring years of experience both at the inn, as well as in hospitality.

Aside from the view, the most remarked upon feature at the Inn is the rich eucalyptus flooring, which was milled from trees on Maui. It is an island tradition to remove your shoes before entering a Hawaiian home; this not only protects the beautiful floors, but also allows you to feel the cool, smooth wood beneath your feet. Another interesting facet of the Inn is the Hawaiian-style open air atmosphere of the house. This very appealing architectural design for visitors from cooler regions helps capture the soft tropical breezes and makes air conditioning unnecessary.
