Ellijay was first settled by the Cherokee Indians until their removal to Oklahoma in the infamous Trail of Tears. Ellijay and its many rivers retain their Indian names. The name Ellijay, means New Ground Place or a place which has been newly prepared for planting. The local rivers include: Ellijay, Catercay and Coosawattee. All three rivers flow into nearby Carters Lake, the deepest lake in the state of Georgia. Gilmer County is in the foothills of the Chattahoochee National Forest in the Appalachian Mountain Range. What a great place to live and visit!
