THE PAST: A RICH TRADITION OF HOSPITALITY
Originally built in 1820 as The Gum Springs Inn serving farmers transporting goods on the 1805 Federal Road. It later served as a stagecoach stop, as is still evidenced by the large, flat stones set at the head of the verandah. Natural springs and remnants of that road exist today directly in front of the inn.
In 1947 the Inn was completely rebuilt and preserved using the 1820 building as the substructure. In 1994 the building was completely renovated and was reopened as a bed & breakfast. In 2000, Celeste and Harry Neely purchased the inn and since have completely redecorated, upgraded, and refashioned the entire facility. Magnificent furnishings complement this 1820 grand manor.

THE PRESENT: AN ELEGANT INN - A LANDMARK OF THE OLD SOUTH
Its rich historical heritage is faithfully preserved by its Colonial Revival style and the abundance of museum quality period antiques that include Federal mirrors, cherry and mahogany furniture, and a magnificent tall case clock. In addition to several reverse glass paintings, the collection also includes original Curriers & Ives Tall Ship lithographs and limited edition Civil War prints. Perhaps the most interesting is a Letter of Mark for the ship Brig Avon of New York signed in 1815 by President James Madison and Secretary of State James Monroe.
Located on 34 splendid acres and well off the road, the rocking chairs on the verandah beckon you to relax and unwind with the sights and sounds of nature. The grounds boast springs with a nature walk through the magestic forest, a secluded lake, and vast rolling fields. Congenial deer and wildlife abound. Don't miss the evening deer feeding! Magnolia, azalea, pecan, dogwood, oak, walnut, and crape myrtle trees are only a sample of the vegetation that envelops the Inn. This unique and serene environment is a peaceful haven from everyday life. Yet, it is only 5 miles from the heart of downtown Athens.
The Inn features 5 rooms and 3 open suites - all feature either king or queen beds, luxuriously fitted with high count linens. Each is tastefully decorated and accented to reflect the historical essence of the nineteenth century, yet is modern in conveniences and comfort. All have private bath, air conditioning, cable television, and telephone. Each radiates its own personality-some are brighter, some are more casual. What they all have in common is comfort, charm, and grace. An elegant parlor and library provide delicious ways to escape the world and drift off by yourself.
A full and healthy breakfast is elegantly served on fine china and cut glass crystal, that features fresh fruit, breads, yogurt, and gourmet hot entrees such as caramel apple French toast and egg-cheese casserole. Complimentary sherry is the final intimate touch before a good night's rest.
We specialize in romantic getaways, such as anniversaries, wedding nights and other special events. Make your visit extra special by adding on one of our optional pampering packages.
We are only 5 miles from the heart of downtown Athens, home of the University of Georgia. The many shops, restaurants, and abundant nightlife are but 10 minutes away.
