History
The Gastonian, comprised of two striking Regency-Italianate style mansions, rests in the heart of Savannah’s beautiful Historic District. Built in 1868, the mansions served as a residence until 1985. These majestic mansions, like many of Savannah’s old homes, serve as reminders of Savannah’s rich history.
The exterior cracks along the mansions’ façade and a crack along the fireplace in the original kitchen of The Gastonian were caused by an earthquake that struck the Coastal Empire in the late 1800s. Many Savannahians fled their homes during the panic, but The Gastonian remained standing.
In December of 2000, The Gastonian was selected for membership in Relais & Chateaux, the international association of luxury hotels and restaurants. Membership in this very elite group distinguished The Gastonian as one of the finest luxury hotels in the world.
On April 1, 2005, HLC Hotels, Inc, a Savannah-owned and operated hotel management company, purchased The Gastonian and added it to its downtown collection of upscale historic inns in Savannah, including The Marshall House, The Eliza Thompson House, The East Bay Inn The Olde Harbour Inn, and the Kehoe House. The Gastonian is now the leading historic inn in the collection and was also voted best bed and breakfast in Savannah in 2005.
