In 1979, The Ballastone opened as Savannah's first bed and breakfast Inn and was named for the stones used as ballast in ships arriving at Savannah's port in the late 1700s and early 1800s. One almost expects the former mansion owners -- banker, soldier, bordello and Girl Scouts -- to whisper the exciting stories that the elegant Italianate mansion holds secret. Historical tribute has been given the Inn by the National Trust and Historic Savannah Foundation.
