The Mansion was built in 1873 by Mr. William S.Culbertson, a wealthy philanthropist. The Culbertsons saw a need to help care for widows following the civil war. The Culbertson Widows' Home filled this need for nearly 100 years. The Mansion was built on the same floor plan as Mr. Culbertson's private residence so the ladies would feel proud of the home. It has 3 stories totaling 8,700 square feet plus a walkout basement with an additional 3,000 square feet. Today, the Mansion still has most of its original features: The exterior has the original wrought iron fence with limestone gate posts, the iron veranda on the front, two additional verandas on the back, original brick sidewalks and patios. The interior features dual mahogany staircases to the third floor, 10 spacious bedrooms with king-size beds, parlors, sitting rooms, wide hallways, 10 fireplaces, 12 1/2 foot ceilings, 6 1/2 bathrooms, dining room, large breakfast room, butler's kitchen, and dumbwaiter. The lower level has original brick floors and a gourmet European style kitchen. Updates include new electrical plumbing, two master bathrooms, one with jacuzzi, new Steam boiler and much more. The Mansion is on ¾ acre on Historic Mansion Row district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also designated as an Indiana Historical Landmarks site. It is conveniently located near major interstates and is 10 minutes from downtown Louisville, Kentucky.
