History of the Bridgewater House:

The Bridgewater House is probably the most historically important in all of the Memphis area. It was built prior to 1890 and was named The Bridgewater School House. Reportedly, there was a slave from the north by the name of Bridgewater, who bought up the land in the community.  There was a street, church and school named after him. Bridgewater School House served the community by providing an education for all of the African American children. Originally there were 2 classrooms, one each for the younger boys and girls. Later, there was a larger classroom in the back of the school added on for the older boys and girls. The schoolhouse was heated by coal and the teachers sometimes brought in food to cook for the children’s lunch. The day began with the Pledge of Allegiance and ended by providing a safe, caring environment for all the children to learn. It remained a school until the 1950’s.

The house was restored in 1977 and later sold to the Mistilis in 1985 who in turn  turned it into a B&B. It was found through research that the Rosenwald concept was instituted at the school in the early 1900’s. Julius Rosenwald, the founder and CEO of Sears Roebuck, along with Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute, developed a school concept to promote model schools for African American children of the rural south. There were over 5,300 schools and auxiliary buildings raised from 1912 to 1932. He asked for the community to contribute 50% of the cost of construction.
