Elias Child House B&B

Woodstock, Connecticut

Described as the 'mansion house' by the mid 1700's, the inn is set on 47 pastoral acres on a quiet country road.

Woodstock, Connecticut (CT) Bed and Breakfast: Described as the mansion house in the 1700's, Elias Child House is a historic treasure in northeastern Connecticut. The innkeepers honed their innkeeping skills during their 16+ years of running Maple Hill Farm B&B. Elias Child House is located in a rural area on 47 acres of pasture and woodland. Perrin Road is extremely lightly traveled, so city dwellers may have trouble sleeping due to the silence, which may be punctuated by the singing of the night critters or the hooting of an owl.

Early land records describe the framing of John Child's house in 1714. Probably starting as a one-room dwelling, the home grew and increased as the family, and the wealth, increased. By the mid 1700's the home was described as the "mansion house." It is truly a compliment to a prosperous farmer and landowner.

The nine fireplaces remain intact, with two walk-in cooking hearths and a beehive oven. A smoke chamber for preparing meat is still present on one of the chimney columns in the attic. One mustn't forget the unique "indoor outhouse," or privy, attached to the el, a true sign of wealth in the 18th century. It is currently part of a screened porch for all to enjoy. Twelve-over-twelve windows, many with the original wavy glass, original wide-board floors, paneling and wainscoting bear testimony to Colonial craftsmanship.
