WELCOME! Sundance Bear Lodge is a family oriented, pet friendly, country style Bed and Breakfast in south-western Colorado between Mesa Verde National Park (only 10 miles to the entrance), Durango (30 miles to the Durango - Silverton train) and Dolores (fishing on the Dolores river). We have three buildings: Lodge, Log Cabin and Guest House: spend a relaxing evening on the porches enjoying the vistas -- Mesa Verde one way, the La Plata mountains the other.
Match your family's vacation needs with three types of lodging accommodations in one location at our inn, each with a slightly different ambiance, all on 80 plus acres to hike and enjoy.
Two Bed and Breakfast rooms with baths in the main lodge;
Romantic Log Cabin with loft with bed and breakfast option
You have arrived at the Old West of 1300AD & the vanishing Anasazi culture - and in the Wild West of the American frontier with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Enjoy this step back in time, when life moved at a slower pace. Mancos, Colorado and Sundance Bear Lodge are your base to see and enjoy cliff dwellings, Durango, Cortez, Dolores, the Four Corners and the San Juan Skyway. We even have stories about Butch Cassidy bank robberies and Louis L'Amour (check out his book Passin' Through - we're on page 6)!
Plan your tours of the area -- for starters, a day in Mesa Verde Nat'l Park understanding the history of these Ancestral Puebloans and the majesty of their cliff dwellings, a day to ride the Durango-Silverton train, see Durango and Silverton, maybe a jeep ride to visit ghost towns, or some hiking in the national forest nearby. We'll be happy to help you plan your activities.
Return to Sundance Bear after this full day of visiting the archeological centers of Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, the Anasazi Heritage Center, or branching out to tour the San Juan Skyway, hike the La Plata Mountains, fish the Dolores River, horseback riding in the National Forest and relax in the comfort of the lodge living room, soak in the hot tub, or snooze in the hammock.
Enjoy our 80+ acres of pastures, trees and canyon with stream, four miles north of Mancos, Colorado on Hwy 184, at about 7,000 ft. elevation. Guests are welcome to explore on foot or on their horse. And our dog loves to show you the way. Save time to sit back and enjoy the views of Mesa Verde National Park, the La Platas and the Sleeping Ute.
The main lodge has two B&B rooms for a good night's sleep -- plus a great room for relaxation, reading, watching a movie ----and breakfast in the morning. Relaxing on the front porch with a view of Mesa Verde is high on the list as well. And with only two guest rooms here, it feels more like Grandma's house than anything else.
The Mancos Room ($112 per night, including full breakfast)
Queen bed with private bath (tub/shower). Decor includes Navajo rug, art by Howard Terpning, and a REAL Teddy Bear on the bed (from the Colorado Hotel, where President Teddy Roosevelt was given the first Teddy bear by the staff on one of his trips west). The Santa Fe style bed is extra tall and has a hand carved headboard. Locally produced Aspen wood ceilings add a warmth to the room.
The Mesa Verde ($135 per night for 2, including full breakfast; add $12 for third person)
Corner bedroom has a new expanded queen plus single, also with private bath (shower). Decor includes sand painting, Navajo rug, and views of Mesa Verde. This room includes TV and a corner gas log fireplace. (Please ask about special pricing when renting both rooms.) Hot tub is on the front porch, and a sauna is just a few steps away in the tower.
Log Cabin
This enchanting log cabin is across the pond from the main lodge. Pull up a chair on the western deck and enjoy the view of Mesa Verde -- about 5 mi. away as the crow flies. You have a front row seat for spectacular summer sunsets! The three decks provide views once shared by Butch Cassidy. The views are incredible!
Downstairs is the queen bedroom, unique bath, kitchen space and dining set. A gas log fireplace adds ambiance and keeps the cabin toasty in winter. The loft has a double bed and sofa, TV/VCR/DVD -- effectively the living room -- but sometimes the children's entertainment center! The unique bath always gets "Wow" comments with its river rock lined shower/tub. Compact but suitable for a family of 4. Couples have been enchanted. The "kitchen" has refrigerator, electric stove with oven, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster. Charcoal and gas BBQ outside. This cabin can be rented Self Catering style (guests do their own meals) or B&B style (we provide full breakfast in the main lodge). The most popular lodging at Sundance Bear, the cabin rents very early for most of the year.
B&B" or self-catering style (Fall/Winter $165, Summer $199 self-catering). Winter/spring weekly $700 rate. Call about monthly rental.

Guest House
Guest House
Bring the whole family or your best friends and enjoy the Guest House in "western casual luxury" -- comfortable, new 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house -- close to the main lodge, but "over the hill" for privacy. The house sleeps 8-10 people and can be rented complete or as two separate units. The great room / kitchen common area separate the two units. The Guest House is a self-catering cabin (breakfast NOT included). Note: this house is handicap accessible: ramps, grab bars, full size rooms and wide doors. Each bedroom has an outside door and handicap access.
1 bedroom unit $130 - sleeps 3
2 bedroom unit $225 - sleeps 6
Sole occupancy (rent either above and we guarantee the other unit will not be rented)
Snacks, tea, coffee, juice and soft drinks available on the Lodge kitchen buffet counter.
Dining is available at the Millwood Junction, Kennebec Cafe or one of many fine restaurants in Durango, Dolores or Cortez, Colorado. Mancos offers light supper at Aborena Gallery. Absolute Bakery does some dinners in summer. Metate Room at Mesa Verde is usually a 5 star facility! We provide directory listings in your room.
Hot tub on the main house porch - always hot! And a Sauna inside.
The porches offer views of the La Plata Mountains, Mesa Verde and the Sleeping Ute.
We have two 60' sand/gravel corrals with water and a loafing shed, if you are traveling with horses. Exercise your horse on our outdoor arena or ride our 80+ acres.
Check out our 14 foot diameter tipi with the La Platas as your front yard and sunset over Mesa Verde.
