Lake City, California (CA): Winje's Farm Cottage is a rustic cottage from the 1800's that has been restored to offer warm accommodations to up to three guests. The cottage is decorated with antiques and has a fully equipped kitchen where guests can help themselves to the ingredients for a self-serve farm breakfast. Fresh bread and organic grown vegetables are also provided. The cottage is located in one of California's most unique valleys with views of three alkaline lakebeds and plenty of wildlife to enjoy.

Winje's Farm Cottage - Lake City, California A Perfect Mountain Hideaway. Imagine a place with no traffic lights, no sirens, no traffic jams, no pollution, no neon. We're crowded with Sandhill Cranes, run over by ground squirrels, surrounded by herds of deer, woken by the sun and burbled to sleep by a busy mountain stream. The fishing is good and the hiking even better. Read a fat book under a shady tree or hike your socks off. Whatever you need from a country getaway, you'll find it in Surprise Valley.

Winje's Farm Cottage is a lovingly restored 1865 pioneer cabin with all the creature comforts to make your stay memorable. The cottage has warm antique wood finishes and a fully-equipped kitchen with microwave, electric stove, coffee machine, etc. The wood bathroom is exquisite with a stunning shower built from antique board.

Winje's Farm Cottage is a self-catering B&B, in that the makings of a generous full farm breakfast will be in the refrigerator for guests to cook whenever it suits them - even for dinner, if that's their choice. Fresh organic vegetables from our garden will be provided every day in season. The cottage has one double bed and one single bed, there is also a double room available in the main house.

The valley itself has a string of three majestic alkaline lakebeds, which mirror the sky when they're filled with water (after the snow). We are located 9 miles from the small town of Fort Bidwell, one of the earliest forts on the Lassen Applegate Trail. In the Northern part of Surprise Valley, Lake City is about a 6-hour drive from the Bay Area, and 2 1/2 hours from either Redding or 3 ½ from Reno/Tahoe International Airport.

Go to sleep with the sound of the nearby creek in your ears, or the rush of wind in the wonderful old trees around the homestead. You can listen to the owls, or hear the far-off yip of coyotes in the desert night. Ride your bike up Fandango Pass to watch the sun rise; this area has one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in California. Contemplate the starry sky or go for a walk in the moonlight. Watch the birds all day, take a scenic drive into the desert, study petroglyphs in solitude and silence, hike in the forest, and go into town for dinner. We're also a comfortable drive away from the annual Burning Man event. This is your home, your time, spend it as you please.
