Introduction
Webster House, a shining example of Gothic Revival architecture, was fashioned in New York, carried by ship around Cape Horn, and assembled in Alameda in 1854. It holds the double distinction of being Alameda's oldest house and a historical monument. The home was owned by Deacon John Nelson Webster, whose family tree includes a branch for Daniel Webster, one of America's finest statesmen. This home is an original Andrew Jackson Downing, also known as the Father of Architecture. It is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and is a unique type of architecture left in the United States today - the original "Pioneer Home of the Island".
