Introduction

At the center of the Monterey Peninsula, Pacific Grove is distinguished by the Martine Inn. Renovated by Don Martine, an expert on Victoriana, the expansive 100-year-old home is an outstanding hostelry furnished with museum quality antiques. Overlooking Monterey Bay, the Inn offers some of the finest views available to Peninsula visitors. Guests enjoy breakfast served on antique Sheffield silver, play billiards in the game room, relax in the courtyard with its oriental fountain, and examine lovingly restored vintage MG automobiles. The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Monterey’s Cannery Row are only four blocks away.

Sally Parke was the sister of James Parke - one of the original owners' daughters and an excellent early California landscape painter. She studied in Paris and her paintings are highly valued today. Some are displayed at the Inn along with many other famous artists of the Monterey Peninsula. You can see how the Monterey Peninsula looked through their eyes and talent almost 100 years ago and compare that with current photos.

The Perfect Place For Your Morning Coffee

Hot & Cold Hors d'oeuvres Every Evening Enjoy our 1917 nickelodeon, 1890 White Oak pool table and antique 1930's Jennings dime slot machine. Also view an original stained glass window from the M.G. Factory in England, historic Mercedes Benz posters and Don Martine's MG trophy case.

The courtyard once contained 3 Oriental ponds with an arched bridge over the center pond. One of the daughters of the Parkes fell into one of the ponds and they filled 2 of them for safety reasons and cemented in a shuffle board area. It is a wonderful, quiet area for reading or sunbathing, protected on all 4 sides from the wind. It is also the prime area for the many weddings that take place at the Inn.

Our library is full of interesting and informative material such as restaurant menus, awards presented to the Inn, over 1,000 books, current magazines and portfolios of pictures of the Inn's restoration, special events held here, the car collection and racing photos. You can play checkers, sit and read, lounge by the fireplace or just people watch. The inlaid mahogany and oak floor brings thoughts of long ago. Pictures of the Parke family and Don and his mother and father hang in oval frames over the fireplace and marble mantle clock. A huge copper/brass floor lamp with large fringed shade casts a soft glow in the room.

Hear the actual style and personality of many of the great pianists of the 1920s and 1930s on our 1923 reproducing baby grand piano. The rolls were made by the pianist playing on a special machine that measured volume, speed, intensity, inflection, etc. The special rolls contain 10 more lines of information than a normal player piano. Only the very wealthy of the early 1900s could afford the rolls, which cost typically more than a factory worker's day's pay.

Library & Reproducing Piano

Beautiful Entry Our entry has brochures and local publications for you to review and has coffee, tea and hot chocolate from early morning until 9 pm. Afternoon snacks are also presented in the entry area. A featured item on the stairs' second landing is a water color painted by Sandra Leitzinger of Martine Inn and our famous 1950 MG TD Von Neuman Special Racecar.

The use of silver in the late 1800's is one of the major changes in lifestyle between then and now. We have collected a very significant collection of both flatware and hollow-ware from the 1700s, 1800s and early 1900s. You can see spoon warmers, asparagus trays and tongs, merry-go-round cruet sets and flatware silver set Lancaster Rose made by Gorham and introduced in 1896 that has 40 pieces to each placesetting and 86 serving pieces. Your breakfast table will be set with some of these silver pieces.

Ice & Beverages - If you want ice, we are happy to bring it to you. Please ask the staff to bring you any of the beverages on our wine list. It will be presented to you on a silver tray with glasses appropriate to the beverage. This service is available from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Aquarium Tickets - Tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium are available from our office at the same rate as at the gate. They are "anytime" admission tickets and will allow you admission without waiting in line. They are 2 day tickets allowing you to return the next day at no additional charge.

Monterey Bay Whale Watch Tickets - Daily trips are led by marine biologists and experienced captains. Tickets are available from the innkeepers.

National Steinbeck Center In Salinas - John Steinbeck lived in Pacific Grove for a considerable portion of his life. In fact, Don Martine used to deliver the Monterey Herald to their home in P.G. Tickets for the extensive exhibits at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas are available from the innkeepers.
