Introduction
Hilltop Bed and Breakfast captures the best of a California retreat, a hillside home offering the most beautiful views in the world and immediate access to a world renown college town. It can be a romantic hideaway and a jumping off point for sophisticated city entertainment.
Located on its own promontory in the Berkeley Hills, this magnificent residence has a 260 degree panoramic view. With clear skies one can see 50 miles past the Golden Gate Bridge to the Farallon Islands.
This unique house is located directly above the University of California Berkeley campus. At 800 feet above sea level, it looks down upon the red tiled roofs of the University, the campanile and the International House.
Though only a mile to campus and the center of town, the home is located in an exceptionally tranquil natural setting bordering hundreds of unspoiled acres of the East Bay Regional Parks. Red shouldered hawks, deer and the occasional fox make this home seem like a sanctuary, 5 minutes above the vibrant city.
In contrast to the west side's sweeping views, the house is centered around a swimming pool and interior courtyard offering shelter, privacy and outdoor pleasure. The house and the garden area are all on one level after you descend 18 steps from the parking area.
The house was built in 1946 by architect Robert Ratcliff and remodeled in 1959 after a design by Julian Taylor. It is built with massive redwood beams with living and dining rooms that use the views as primary decoration. Glass, adobe and redwood give this residence a classic Berkeley charm.
There is one guest room with private bathroom. The room, with redwood beam ceiling, looks out over the interior courtyard and swimming pool. Shoji screens close for privacy. This room opens directly onto the courtyard as do most of the rooms in the house.
