Cardiff-By-The-Sea was established by Frank J. Mullen in 1911. He named the small town Cardiff after his wife's home in Wales. Later, a German composer added "By-The-Sea". Cardiff-By-The-Sea is a charming little village located within the city of Encinitas about 95 miles south of Los Angeles and 25 miles north of San Diego. The Cardiff-By-The-Sea calendar keeps locals and visitors busy with various activities throughout the year. August has the "Dog Days of Summer" event- entertainment for dogs and the people who love them. The city also hosts "Get Acquainted" breakfasts and "Sunset By The Sea" Along with these regularly scheduled events, various other festivals and activities are scheduled as well. With its 2 miles of pristine beaches and moderate temperatures, visitors of all kinds are attracted to this fantastic little village. Cardiff Reef attracts surfers from all over California year-round. With its walkability, the convenience of restaurants, shopping and entertainment are just around the corner. There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy with jogging, tennis, hang gliding, golfing or for the naturalists, visiting the San Elijo Lagoon proves to be quite enjoyable. For a short drive, San Diego offers the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
