The meadows for which this area is known provided Mi Wok Indians with vast hunting and gathering grounds. Soap root and acorns are still plentiful today. In the 1870s, Buck Meadows was known as Hamilton Station named for people for the Hamilton family. Hamilton Station was a stage stop that had a reputation for fresh cold cream from a spring cellar that could be compared to amenities of San Francisco's finest. The springs run cool and clear today.
