The Center is a wonderful stop on any day, but Thurs. at 2p.m. take the curation tour in addition to your visit to the regular exhibits. No extra cost! You will love it!

At Mesa Verde the evening tours of Cliff Palace are now available every night of the week! The tours are longer, temps are cooler, and fewer people are on each tour. Plus you enjoy a "bit of theater" as your tour guide is an historical character. These are superb tours and only $10 (compared to the day tours at $3).

We are having a wonderful summer season in the 4 Corners. The monsoon rains helped control the fire hazard in the area and cool off the temps. Come visit Mesa Verde which is the only national park dedicated to historical culture (1200A.D.)

Sundance bear Lodge is open all year with room for 20 guests.
To get a very good survey of what the area has to offer for your vacation, please visit www.MesaVerdeCountry.com. We enjoy miles of national forest, a couple scenic/historic byways, great hiking/biking and horseback riding to mention a few. In addition to the Memorial Day Native American art festival, we have hot air balloons and Colorado wines in the fall.

Compliments of the Prof. Assoc. if Innkeepers, we are all interested in convincing travelers that there is a Better Way to Stay -- compared to what they have been doing. Take the holidays for instance. It is possible to be too close to family on a holiday! You and the folks you love need private space! Here is a thought from PAII:

This holiday season show "familyed-out" travelers that inns and B&Bs are the better way to stay

Twenty-two percent of travelers feel pressure to travel to see family for the holidays and 17 percent have cut a holiday family trip short because they were "family-ed out." Twenty-five percent of respondents would rather stay somewhere else for the December holidays than where they are planning to stay. This gives innkeepers the perfect opportunity to show "family-ed out" travelers the better way to stay. ...B&Bs can offer the perfect alternative to staying with the in-laws, reminding travelers that a little time away from Mom and Dad-in-law may keep the holidays merry and bright.

Do you agree with us????

Too many people in a one bath house...nudging the children from their rooms so out-of-town extended family can move in...the teens are too loud for thegrandparents to be comfortable...Haven't we all experienced these issues that arise when staying with family?

We try to let our friends and neighbors know that Sundance Bear Lodge can be the extra room that their homes are missing!

Our big guest house has been reserved for the holidays -- but a family of 1-4 can still reserve our log cabin for Christmas. If you plan to be in the 4 Corners, give us a call at Sundance Bear Lodge. We try to make Christmas - New Years special.

You look like an idiot.

2. Turn your cap right, your head ain't crooked.

3. Let's get this straight: it's called a "gravel road." I drive a pickup truck because I want to. No matter how slow you drive, you're gonna get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way.

4. They are cattle. That's why they smell like cattle. They smell like money to us. Get over it. Don't like it? I-10 & I-40 go east and west, I-17 & I-15 & I-25 go north and south. It's called being friendly. Try to understand the concept.

7. If that cell phone rings while a bunch of geese/ pheasants/ ducks/doves are comin' in during a hunt, we WILL shoot it outta your hand. You better hope you don't have it up to your ear at the time.

8. Yeah. We eat trout, salmon, deer and elk. You really want sushi and caviar? It's available at the corner bait shop.

9. The 'Opener' refers to the first day of deer season. It's a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November.

10. We open doors for women. That's applied to all women, regardless of age.

11. No, there's no 'vegetarian special' on the menu. Order steak, or you can order the Chef's Salad and pick off the 2 pounds of ham and turkey.

12. When we fill out a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables, and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup! Oh, yeah ... We don't care what you folks in Cincinnati call that stuff you eat ... IT AIN'T REAL CHILI!!

13. You bring 'Coke' into my house, it better be brown, wet and served over ice. You bring 'Mary Jane' into my house, she better be cute, know how to shoot, drive a truck, and have long hair.

14. College and High School Football is as important here as the Giants, the Yankees, the Mets, the Lakers and the Knicks, and a dang site more fun to watch.

15. Yeah, we have golf courses.
Bob and I own a couple horses -- 2 lovely bay mares -- we don't haul them across country on a trip. But we have guests who do travel with horses. A 2009 guest will be back shortly for more riding excursions into the San Juan forest, and this is a trip from TN to CO. And we had guests who often drove from the upper Midwest to AZ with a horse and a mule -- and stopped here to do some riding with our friends at Rimrock Outfitters. Every year or so one of Pat Parelli's students will drop in en route to the extensive training facilities in Pagosa Springs. Another guest brought more horses than needed -- because it wouldn't be right to leave one home alone!

So however you consider traveling with your horse, come see us at Sundance Bear Lodge. The guest accommodations are just right whether you have 2 feet and need a bed or 4 feet and need a large corral to frolic in. Our focus is on the guests with 2 feet, but we welcome and enjoy the ones with 4 feet, mane and tail.

The 7p.m. tour is limited to about 20 people and the guide is "in character". Our step back in time was to about 1920-1930. It was delightful -- cooler temps than daytime, no crowds, very interesting ranger/guide. Before the tour our group of 5 had supper at the Metate Room at Far View, and the wait staff did a lovely job of service within a time deadline.

I love the increased opportunities for enoyng Mesa Verde this year. New long hikes to different sites. The evening tour. Wonderful additions to Mesa Verde!

We can almost ignore the road work that federal stimulus money is payng for. The new road is super -- and will be complete soon. Being patient is important.

So even if you have been to Mesa Verde before -- it is worth seeing it again!! Open all year, by the way -- just like we are at Sundance Bear Lodge.

Sure -- it is mid -June -- but aren't you already thinking about the cooler temps of a fall getaway? No disrespect meant to children, but adults love to travel after the kids go back to school. So for many folks, they/you are not about to travel June-July- first half of August. Those are the family months when every child in the country is on summer break!

Late August through early November are my favorite weather months. Summer can be Balloon festival in Mancos...motorcylce rally over Labor Day...aspen colors and lots more! The colors show up at different altitudes at slightly differnt times; Mancos is at 7000 ft but Telluraide is more like 9,000. Plan accordingly! OHHHHHH -- another local event -- cattle drives! Yes, the local ranchers move the catle down the state and US Highways going to and from pasture in the national forest. I am not a rancher, so I cannot forecast the traffic jams; forest permits and Mother Nature have influence here.

As for Sundance Bear Lodge, a great time for a girls/guys getaway or retreat ( quilting?? scrapbooking? art? other?). Come see us! Fall is a great time in the 4 Corners!
