Elizabethan Nobleman At The Irish Inn

ElizabethanGuestsOfHonour.jpgLarry Sidwell, innkeeeper of Sidwell & Friends B&B in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, acquired this painting of an Elizabethan Nobleman. He very generously sold it on to us at The Irish Inn, so we had to host a dinner and make both gentlemen guests of honour. There is art from six continents on display at The Irish Inn, some created by guests who have stayed here, local area artists, and a few masterpieces. The subject of this painting may be Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, (4 March 1526 - 23 July 1596).  He was the son of Mary Boleyn -- the sister of Anne Boleyn and also mistress to King Henry VIII of England.  The film "The Other Boleyn Girl" provides a historical backdrop that includes an explanation of why Henry Carey was likely the illegitimate son of Henry VIII.  The artist of this painting is unknown (name could have been accidentally removed in cleaning), but will be examined by experts to determine its origin.  This photograph by Brian Marshall McCreery shows Sidwell with the painting.
