A Perfect Blue Ridge Day in Virginia!

Ideas for a Perfect Blue Ridge Day

Casting Call

FishingCast your reel in an outdoor lovers' paradise. In the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you'll find trophy sized fish in the many lakes, reservoirs, rivers and streams that dot the countryside. Fish where the pros fish -- Smith Mountain Lake is the site of a nationally acclaimed Bassmasters Tournament. Or try your luck on one of the peaceful rivers and streams of the Roanoke Valley, many of which are stocked for trout season. Two great websites can help you find the perfect place to cast: www.fishvirginiafirst.com and www.roanokeoutside.com.

Savor a taste of the Blue Ridge

More than 200 years ago, Thomas Jefferson knew that the crisp mountain air and fertile soil of the Blue Ridge Mountains made ideal conditions for growing grapes. The Roanoke Valley boasts several award-winning wineries. All are family owned and offer tours and tastings. Many host special events, festivals and concerts. For a complete list, visit the winery page of our website. From cabernets to pinot noirs, you'll definitely want to offer a toast to Blue Ridge Mountain wineries. www.visitroanokeva.com.

A Day at the Museum

Smithsonian Magazine wants to encourage you and your family to visit some of the Roanoke Valley's finest historic and educational museums. Three Roanoke Valley institutions are participating in the 6th Annual Museum Day on September 25, 2010. To celebrate, participating museums are offering a Museum Day Ticket good for free admission for two people. Tickets must be downloaded in advance from the Smithsonian Magazine website, limit one per household. So get your ticket and visit the Virginia Museum of Transportation, History Museum of Western Virginia, or Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest.
