The mountains are impossible to miss. From every angle a view greets you. While it would be impossible to provide all the spectacular natural amenities throughout the region, many stand out. smithmountainlake.jpg

Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most popular national park systems, running 469 miles through mountains and open meadows. Through stone overpasses and the deciduous canopy, historic structures complement the view. The parkway offers the best fall foliage experience and spring time blossoms. There are several entrance points throughout the region. (Claiborne House is 15 miles to three entrances and boasts some scenic drives up onto the Parkway, like Shooting Creek Road, Five Mile Mountain Road - all of these are named in bluegrass songs!)

Mill Mountain Park and Discovery Center is a popular tourist destination and home to the Roanoke Star and Mill Mountain Zoo. The park features outlooks, hiking trails, and beautiful views of the Roanoke Valley, as well as a Discovery Center. Mill Mountain Park, Roanoke 540.853.1236

Mill Mountain Zoo is home to a unique array of animal species, including a rare Red Panda, Snow Leopard, and White-naped Crane. Mill Mountain Zoo, Roanoke 540.343.3241

Natural Bridge is often considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Standing 215 feet tall and 90 feet wide. What was once owned by Thomas Jefferson also bears the initials of George Washington. 15 Appledore Lane, Natural Bridge 800.533.1410

Natural Bridge Zoo is home to the most complete collection of exotic animals and birds in the state of Virginia, and serves as a breeding center for rare and endangered species. 5784 S Lee Hwy Natural Bridge 540.291.2420

The Peaks of Otter offer awe-inspiring views, buses to the top, and a restaurant.  Blue Ridge Parkway, mile post 86. (BRING YOUR CAMERA!)

Smith Mountain Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Virginia with over 500 miles of shore line winding through the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Franklin County 800.676.8203 (CLOSER THAN YOU THINK!)

Virginia Safari Park features exotic wild animals roaming throughout an open park. Visitors can drive through the park and interact with a variety of animals in a natural environment. 229 Safari Lane, Natural Bridge 540.291.3205 (Highly recommended by your Innkeeper Shellie!)
