Introduction
Welcome to Paca de Paja -- a small Bed & Breakfast in a Santa Fe style strawbale home located in the lap of the Sierrita Mountains, about 1/2 hour west of Tucson. Completed in 1999 by owner-builder Caroline Coalter Wilson, this bright, passive solar home is a delightful desert getaway with genuine Southwest charm.
Guests always enjoy this home's unique strawbale coziness, fireplace, deep window sills, Mexican tile, antiques, handcarved furniture from Mexico, oriental rugs, flagstone patios, Navajo rugs, pollinator gardens, ramadas, and wildlife watering pool.
Feel at home in a lovely guest room with a queen-size bed, window seat, antiques, tall windows that open wide, and a private bath with Antiguo tile. An adjacent sitting room is all yours and has a phone, VCR, library, and writing desk. A private entrance and patio complete the guest suite.
What to do -- Museums, Mountain Biking, and Mexico
Paco de Paja is about 1/2 hour from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Kitt Peak National Observatory, and Saguaro National Park. It is 45 minutes from the border with Mexico and 35 minutes from downtown Tucson.
You can spend your day exploring nearby attractions and return to a relaxing sunset on the patio which overlooks one of the most beautiful desert vistas in the area. Or you can spend the day mountain biking through forests of mesquite and yucca that are minutes away. (Mountain bikes are available for you to use.)
Paca de Paja commands a magnificent sweep of classic Sonoran Desert landscape -- jagged desert mountains with graceful bajada slopes, a signature vista of the Southwest. It is the perfect desert retreat for birders, plant enthusiasts, hikers, wildlife watchers, star-gazers, and mountain bikers.
Breakfast with the Birds
You can enjoy a leisurely, deliciously fresh continental breakfast of homemade breads, granolas, fruits, yogurt, coffees, teas, and juice in the dining area or outside on the patio.
If you enjoy bird watching, you will like what you can see from the comfort of your private patio. Or you can step out your door and into open desert to stroll the arroyos and see many more species. If you have breakfast outside, no doubt resident birds will join you. You may also see the herd of javelinas, the kit fox, coyotes, and other wildlife who visit regularly.
