Explore Blackwater Falls State Park close to Davis

Blackwater Falls State Park is situated in the Allegheny Mountains, two miles southeast of Davis in Tucker County. The beautiful falls that you see in many advertisements, calendars and even jigsaw puzzles are the Blackwater Falls, the main attraction of the park. The 57-foot Falls drop down to the Blackwater Canyon, coming from the Blackwater River that winds through Canaan Valley. The chemical reaction of the river's water with the tannic acid of fallen red spruce and hemlock needles produces the dark amber-colored water, hence the name Blackwater.

Hiking at the Blackwater Canyon Rim Trail

The trail takes you through 10 miles of what was formerly an old rail bed of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway that originated in 1888.  It passes through the steep uphill climb known as Black Fork Grade and drops down Backbone Mountain. This is also an ideal biking trail. Through your hike or bike, you will pass several interesting sights, such as the Blackwater River and Douglas Falls. End the day with a rejuvenating rest at your Davis Bed and Breakfast.

Fishing in Blackwater River

The Blackwater River is a rich fishing ground. During spring and summer, the river is stocked every week with trout. The catch and release area is the portion of the Blackwater River that goes through the Blackwater Falls State Park. You can also fish at Pendleton Lake. You can enquire at your Davis Inn or at the park office on getting a fishing license.

Cross Country Skiing

For avid skiers, you can enjoy a day out in more than 10 miles of park trails that have been prepared and maintained for cross country skiing.  Amateur skiers can get lessons at the Sled Run and Cross Country Ski Center. If you don't have your own equipment on hand, the ski center offers rentals. It is open during the ski season, from the middle of December until the Middle of March.

Sledding

If you just want to frolic in the snow but don't want the vigorous workout of skiing, go sledding at the quarter-mile-long sledding hill. Sledding is available when there is sufficient snow during weekends. A rope tow is used to bring you up the hill. Both the sledding hill and the tow area were prepared and are maintained specifically for sledding. If you want to rent a sled, you can do so at the Sled Run and Cross Country Ski Center.

Nature Study

The Park is one place that nature lovers should visit. A combination of the majestic falls with the rich flora and fauna of the forest provides a very interesting study. There are park naturalists that have prepared programs and information regarding the area's natural resources. Open daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the Nature Center displays natural elements and wildlife around Blackwater Falls.
