BAYarts is a lakeside classroom that prides itself in arts education. It offers classes for a variety of artistic techniques such as watercolor, pottery, jewelry and more. The gallery features a variety of local artists, and gives visitors a peek into the culture of the area. There is also a shop where artists can make their handcrafted work available to the public. Lake Erie Nature and Science Center is an educational museum that seeks to offer the public fun and exciting experiences. It has exhibits with local and exotic wildlife, and many animals that are rehabilitating from injuries. The planetarium features shows and educational programs for all ages. The Center has been around since the 1940s and has improved and expanded through the years. There is something for everyone at this 22,000-square-foot facility with its walking trails, exhibits and programs. The Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, and admission is free.

The Allen Memorial Art Museum is organized by Oberlin College and features contemporary, modern and traditional art. The buildings themselves are a sight to see with their architectural styles ranging from neoclassical to Gothic, and with their impressive columns and ironwork. They host a variety of programs, lectures and other events which bring in visitors and allow them to experience art for themselves. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Museum admission is always free to the public, and is a great place to spend the day before heading back to a Sheffield Lake inn.

Inland Seas Maritime Museum

The Inland Seas Maritime Museum is located right on the water and is dedicated to preserving the culture and history of the Great Lakes area. The building, Harbor View, is a historic building itself, and houses a library and two floors of the maritime museum. There is also a replica of the 1877 Vermilion Lighthouse on the property, as well as a pilothouse from the car carrier, Canopus, which is said to be a crowd favorite. The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from May 1 to September 30. Admission for the 2011 season is $6 for adults. A family pass is $14 and includes two parents and up to four children. Inland Seas is only a few minutes from your Sheffield Lake bed and breakfast.
