Enjoy the Swimming Holes in Boone near Vilas for an experience to remember. The scenic views are breathtaking, as the town of Boone is situated in the lovely Blue Ridge Mountains, and only about 10 minutes from Vilas. A Vilas Inn makes for a great mountain retreat and a wonderful way to relax. Get away from the big city to this quiet, secluded area located near Boone, and check out the fun swimming holes.
Elk River Falls
Directions: From Boone, head southwest onto Edgewood Drive and take a left on Councill Street. Continue to Hardin Street and then Blowing Rock Road. Take a right onto N. Carolina 105 S. Turn right onto N. Carolina 184 N and then left onto N. Carolina 194, South Main Street West. Finally, turn right onto US-19E N to Elk Park.
About 40 minutes away from Boone, Elk Park has several fantastic swimming holes. This busy spot, especially in the summer, offers a large plunging swim hole, with beautiful cascading waterfalls not far away. This would be a great way to spend an afternoon from a nearby Vilas Bed and Breakfast. This town in Avery County was named for the numerous elk in the area.
Directions: Drive northwest on RT 321 to a guardrail. The trail is in the area at the beginning of the guardrail.
A steep descent will take you to a huge open water area, the Snake Pit swimming hole. You can jump or tan on the flat rocks in this sunny spot.
Hebron Rock Colony
Directions: From Boone, start at RT 221 south, then go right at RT 105. Take a left on Old Shull's Mill Road, and then turn right on Old Turnpike Road. It's about a 10-minute hike on the trail in Julian Price Park to the swimming hole.
Here you will find cascading falls that plunge into a beautiful ravine surrounded by huge rocks. If you go climb to the very top, you will find your way to an old dam. Past this dam is a grassed area with a great quiet swimming hole.
Trash Can Falls
Directions: From Boone Highway, start at 421 North, then turn left on Highway 321, and then through Sugar Grove. Cross the Watauga River Bridge to find the parking lot. The walking trail is across the road, and leads to the waterfall and swimming hole.
Trash Can Falls is about a half hour from Boone and nearby Vilas. This hole is a popular place for a swim and water jumping around the rocky gorge, but extreme caution should be exercised, as the jump is approximately 15 feet.
Directions: From Boone, take the N. Carolina 105 S. Go slightly left onto the N. Carolina 181 S/US-221 S/Linville Falls Highway. Take a left onto the N. Carolina 181 S/Jonas Ridge Highway to Jonas Ridge.
Along the trail that goes above the waterfalls, you will find a great swimming hole. This fun place offers several pools of water to jump into.
