Established on the principle that everyone "has a right to be all that he can be - to know all that he can know," the Chautauqua Institution is a summer center where visitors can explore education, religion, the arts and recreation. It is best known for its morning lecture series where prominent people such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Goodall and Susan B. Anthony have all spoken. There are Christian worship services Sunday through Friday mornings, Roman Catholic masses and Jewish services on Saturday mornings. Likewise, there are two art galleries; the Smith Memorial Library; the Chautauqua Institution Archives, a research center; the Chautauqua Bookstore; a developmental preschool called the Children's School; the Chautauqua Boys' and Girls' Club, the oldest day camp in the United States; plays, lectures, concerts, operas and more than 300 Special Studies classes with topics like "Digital Photography" and "Basics of Investing in Stocks, Bonds and Mutual Funds." Visitors can also enjoy sailing, golf on two 18-hole courses, tennis, fitness training in two centers and water activities at 4 public beaches. With a mission to promote the teaching and study of nature that would then inspire the "appreciation and responsibility for the natural world," the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History features The Peterson Art Gallery, The Nature Store, a nature center and a museum, on top of the array of programs, events and exhibitions it hosts. The admission fee is $5 for adults, $3 for students and $12 for families. It is open from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 pm to 5 pm Sundays. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays during the months of January, February and March.
