While Long Island is recognized for its collection of coastal architectures, the Horton Point Lighthouse offers a rare combination: a museum and active tower. Hurry from your East Marion inn to this white-brick home. Inside you will find perfectly preserved artifacts and exhibits, detailing the history of both the lighthouse and Suffolk county. Maritime treasures await. Wind up the stairs and to the tower itself. This still functioning lighthouse will amaze. The tours are seasonal, however, and can only be attempted during the summer. Plan well.

Of all Long Island attractions, this may be the most unusual. The Dolan DNA Learning Center is devoted to the study of human genetics and is the first of its kind. Built within the remnants of an elementary school in 1985, this structure offers educational exhibits and interactive pleasures. Anatomy and biology are explained through activities and simulations. It's ideal for families, especially those with young children. It's all the science without the intimidation. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free and no reservations are needed.
