This forest includes over 1,200 acres of beautiful natural woodland which is amazing for anyone to visit. If you're ever in the area of Cincinnatus then checking out the Baker School House state Forest is a must. Most of the land which makes up the state forest was previously used for agricultural land in the 1800s, however much of the soil is not suitable for farming due to its high acidity.
These fields were abandoned in the 1930s and 40s for the greener more attractive fields in the Midwest of the country. In the 30's the land was sold to the state where it was decided to plant trees and turn the area back into the natural forest that it once was.
There are many different types of tree in this forest which makes for quite an interesting trip. The large range of different types of trees also means that there is a varied type of wildlife in the forest which is also very interesting to observe.
The forest is on part of the finger lakes trail which is perhaps one of the best known walks in the state. The finger lakes trail stretches for many miles but it's possible to just walk a small section if you prefer. There aren't any other formal trails but it's possible to make your own and walk wherever you like. Horseback riding is also very popular in the forest.
This is one of the most natural and most scenic forests in the state and is certainly worth exploring. Being able to walk anywhere you like rather than having to stick to paths and trails is very helpful. If you do decide to go exploring then it's important to let people know where you are going and also take a friend with you, forests can be dangerous if you get lost.
