The Hillsborough Balloon Festival is held in July of each year, and is host to a variety of activities that will appeal to all ages. The festival lasts about four days and offers nightly events along with a carnival of thrill rides and games. Each night there are different activities and entertainment, including the best of the area's performing artists. There are tractor pulls, car shows and a 5K race. On Sunday afternoon, firefighters from the surrounding towns gather and compete in an old-fashioned fireman's muster. There are displays of art and crafts, as well as a parade and of course, lots of hot air balloons. You can take a ride on one of the beautiful balloons, if you dare. There is a $5 charge for vehicle parking, and small fees for certain activities. The festival is in close proximity to your Hillsborough bed and breakfast.

Schniztelfest has been a tradition in Hillsborough since 2002, and continues to be a celebration of authentic German food. Local volunteers work for two days preparing and fixing the food, that will feed about 3,000 people who want to experience a little bit of Germany. The activities begin Saturday morning with bratwurst, schnitzel, sauerkraut and German potatoes. There are made from scratch breads and rolls, as well as desserts such as kuchen, strudels and pretzels. You'll find music, craft booths and others who set up their wares for visitors to enjoy. There is no fee for admission.

The Living History Event is a fun and educational event that takes visitors back in time. You will see people dressed in clothes from the time period and be able to participate in a variety of events such as gold panning, horse and buggy rides, and battle scenes. There are artifacts and demonstrations set up to give visitors the true feeling of the 1800s. Hillsborough has many historic homes and buildings which are open for tours during this event. The event is held in August, and adult tickets for 2011 are $10 at the door.

The Spring into Summer Artisan's Fair is held at the Hillsborough Center in early June. Artisans from the area come together to set up their exhibits and wares. You can view and purchase a variety of items such as handmade baskets, jewelry, fabric art and much more. There are photography, blacksmith and woodworking booths. A variety of foods are available including pastries and cold drinks. Musical entertainment begins at 1:30 on Saturday and Sunday. Visit the fair before heading back to your Hillsborough inn.
