For those who like to spend vacations traveling back through time, Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory offer an informative blast from the past. Fort Knox was originally constructed in 1844 to protect Bangor from invasion by a future British naval fleet. While the fort never saw any real military action, it was used to station troops from 1863 to 1866. Construction of the Penobscot Narrows Observatory was completed in 2007 and is accessible from Fort Knox. From 420 feet up, at the top of the observatory tower, visitors get a breathtaking view of the Penobscot River and the rest of the Maine countryside below. While the observatory and grounds around the fort are open year-round, visitors can only access the interior of Fort Knox between May and October. This tourist site is located in Bucksport, between Bangor and your Castine bed and breakfast.
